Fresh and New
The last time I took part in Wednesday Friends Day we were at Spring Roll. While a good meal was enjoyed amongst friends we caught wind that some new dishes were gonna be popping up soon. Then we got the invite to come back in a couple weeks to try them out. Today was that day. First off we had some rice ball soup. The broth was sweet and the filling of the ball kinda tasted like a Reese's Peanut Butter Cup. It was more like a dessert soup, but good nonetheless.
Next up was an unnamed dish...it had smoked tofu, small green beans, celery and carrots. They also threw in a few broad beans for us to try the consistency out. The sauce was a bit spicy. This dish was actually really good and it turned out to be a nice change. Normally we always get greezy chinese food here but this dish was light and fresh tasting. This is a definite would order again.
Next up is the Mapo tofu, not exactly new but new to us. Another surprise, just an all around good dish. There was talk of growing up and eating healthy at this point.
Deluxe chop suey was up next and it was a tasty treat, once again only new since we never order this. A nice change from the noodle dishes you sometimes feel obligated to get when you go to a place like this.

Shut The Front Door
A planned trip, bad weather conditions, a cancelled trip, a DV lunch special just before a last minute change of heart were the precursors to my weekend. The roads ended up being perfectly fine on delayed departure time journey to the fine city of Minneapolis. What was originally just a weekend to hang out and relax and be free of the normal day to day turned out to be filled with a ton of great stuff happening in MPLS. The POS record release show, big shouts to the homie Vince for hookin us up with tickets, which I was super stoked on since I can't get enough of his new record. It also turned out that Familia just moved into Uptown and was having their grand re-opening along with a little art display by Todd Bartraud. Here we go with logo inside the new shop.
Let's just say that they mos def didn't do this shop up...

I only had the point and shoot with so I didn't really take any pics at POS but let's just say he ripped it. If you get the chance to see him do it. Sims was also really good as well.
After the show it was time for some food. A little late night Hard Times. Vegan philly cheesesteak. Delicious.
This little ditty was called a Binh Ma or something like that. Allow me to explain...it was seitan with jalapeno cilantro vegenaise, cucumbers and grated daikon and carrot. Well that is about what I remember it being. It was just amazing, savory and so fresh tasting.
Washed that down with a little reality.
We had caught wind of a little diner type place that did up vegan dogs real nice. We drove by it Saturday after Hard Times and decided that it would be our last meal in the Twin Cities for this journey. Sunday we ventured forth to...
There are so many different toppings for your dog here and I'll admit that maybe there aren't as many vegan options for toppings but there are enough to make a tasty treat. They also have a veggie burgers they make themselves. I got the grilled onions and pickled hot peppers on mine. Add a little ketchup and sriracha and you're living. This kinda meal would not be complete without fries and a coke.

Shortcomings
Well not really but here are my fave EPs of 2008. No real order here, but kind of. There is only one specific spot on this list and that is the main reason it was created. We'll start off with a little old school death metal.
Bloodbath - Unblessing The Purity
A great EP from a supergroup of Scandinavian fellows from bands such as Opeth and Katatonia. In my opinion it would be better if Dan Swano was still in the band, but you can't win them all. If you like good ol death metal, give it a whirl.
Ankh Amen Ra - Face The Day, Come What May

Let's just say that I love hip hop. I also love Egypt, maybe even moreso than hip hop, even though I haven't been there. This dude pretty much combines them from the cover art to his name. It's a nice ep with chill beats and good rhymes and Ankh has his head on straight by not giving you the ol guns bitches and drugs gimmick that is so popular. I'm pretty certain it was a free download when he dropped it so check for it.
Reign Supreme - American Violence
I will always and forever have a spot for heavy hardcore in my life and Reign Supreme scratched that itch when I first heard them. There is more than noticable Figure Four influence here but they do it well and I'm pretty sure we aren't gonna be seeing F4 play anytime soon. Regardless, they have a full length coming out this year and my fave song is on there and I already have a spot for it on my best of 2009 list! ha.
Alpha And Omega - Devil's Bed
Now I will admit that I wrote this off when I first heard it. I gave it a few more listens and was really into it. At first it was a little too Blacklisted derived but I realized that I love big riffs and this EP has them all over the place. This is a perfect example of a reason to give a record more than one spin. Now go do that.
Trapped Under Ice - Stay Cold
This band got hyped pretty damn quick and with good cause. This EP brings it, so hard. It's good front to back and I realize that this is only an EP but there isn't a time when you really want to fast forward or skip to the next track, except at the end of one song that has about 30 seconds of dead air.
Aspirations - EP!
I remember Stu telling me to check out his other project not long after we finished up a little tour with Daggermouth. I didn't get around to it and just let it slip. I saw that Aspirations was coming to town and it was a good excuse to see a friend that I rarely ever see. I went down there and was hooked from the get go. I picked up the EP! from my man and was cracked out instantly. Audio crack is all this is, with a touch of party hardcore thrown into the mix. I know this is a friend's project and all that and I could be a little biased but it's just amazing. I defy you to find a song on this record where you aren't bobbin your head or tappin your toes or even wanting to dance. Here is a little rememberance of that fateful night where friendships were shared and new amazing jams were heard.
